My new book, How Much is hypnotic, is a study of the ways in which we become hypnotized and how we can overcome it. I want to let you in on a little secret – the only way to get a full understanding of how hypnotic we are is to actually be ‘in the zone’ (i.e. not thinking about anything of our own volition). One of the biggest problems with getting in a trance is the fear that we’ll wake up and realize that what we’re doing is not our own voluntary actions, but rather involuntary thoughts and behaviors. When we think about something, we generally don’t stop to think what is happening. We keep thinking about it until we decide to change our mind or stop. The same is true with our thoughts, whether it is about meditation or sleep.
So how much is hypnotic? It depends how much we can control it, how much we can control things that aren’t our own.
The fact is that we can control our minds and our thoughts without even knowing it. It’s because we know that our mind can read our thoughts, and that it’s the thoughts that are controlling us. This is called the “mind-reading” effect. If you know a few thoughts about something, you know more about it than a non-hypnotized person. This is also called “automatic writing”.
