It’s been a while since I’ve talked about self-awareness. I’m not sure if that’s a problem or a good thing, but I sure wish I had more talks about it. I feel like I have a lot to unlearn.
You can be very self-aware and still be a terrible person. That’s why I think it’s important to understand what’s going on in your own head. When your self-awareness is strong, you don’t need to check your ego at the door in order to keep yourself from going over the edge. But it’s not just about self-awareness. It’s about self-compassion.
Self-compassion is defined as the ability to sympathize with others without being judgmental. It’s a mental state that encourages you to feel a sense of compassion for others. The tendency to be judgmental of others when you have a strong sense of self-compassion can cause you to turn on the empathy to defend yourself when someone you care about is going through a difficult time. You can develop self-compassion and still be a horrible person.
Well, at least I can’t be a horrible person if I have the self-compassion to stop myself from being a horrible person.
