I’m not exactly sure where this is coming from, but I do know that social media is one of the fastest growing forms of marketing in existence right now. This is not good news for consumers, not good news for retailers and not good news for marketers. Social media is all about sharing (and buying) and creating a huge opportunity for brands to connect and develop new relationships with existing customers and the people who buy their products.
This is all good, but I think we’re going to need to rethink the way we use social media to make it a whole lot more fun. We’re seeing brands take advantage of it for marketing purposes, but we’re also seeing brands go out of their way to make it feel like a social interaction.
Just like in Facebook, brands are constantly creating new content to share in their communities. This is where brands are building a relationship with their audience. There are countless ways to build relationships on Facebook, and it is becoming increasingly apparent that brands are doing this in a way that feels very intimate. We’ve seen brands use Facebook to build a relationship with their customers, then share that relationship with their audience, and then they have the opportunity to actually build sales and get those customers to do something.
The problem is, most social media is built for sharing a blog, not content. Content is the most important thing because people are going to be watching what you post. And if you don’t post something that they like, well… you have a problem.
Facebook’s content is a great example of what we mean when we say content. Facebook makes content like photos, videos, or whatnot. Even if you don’t have photos, videos, or whatnot, you can actually share with their audience. It’s not that Facebook hasn’t been good for you; if you were to post something online, you would be missing out on the first thing you could do.
You have to be careful of how you use your social media accounts. When it comes to gathering information, you will get answers from others who are in the same boat as you. It can be very tempting to post about a party or how much you love your aunt. When people see what you wrote, they might look down on you for doing it. They might think that you are a total slob who is only posting about your aunt because it is fun to do so.

I think that most people see this as a passive-aggressive way to keep you from getting the answers to their questions. We do actually want to answer their questions, but we don’t want people to think that we are ignoring or being hostile to them. We want to keep them as happy as possible until they get the answers to their questions. It’s the same reason we don’t post about our family, our job, or our hobbies.
